Accountability: the overused dirty word.

It is a dirty word because it is thrown around by management so often...and so indecisively...that it becomes just that much more "noise." And it is overused because they can never really achieve it. Accountability will never successfully be mandated by "Management." Ever.

The problem is that "Accountability" is used as a by-word for "Compliance," or "Obedience." True accountability does not come from rules or mandates; it comes from commitment and dedication...and that to the team...from person to person. Furthermore, Management makes the mistake of approaching Accountability as a goal, when it is actually a by-product, wasting time, resources, and energy fighting the wrong battles. Worst of all, this happens over and over again. Focus on building a cohesive team, and you will see Accountability beyond your wildest imagination. The difference is making the move from the short-sightedness of Obedience to Performance...from Control to Facilitation...from Management to Leadership!
