Nimitz: From Chaos to Action

85th Anniversary

3–8 December 2026

The Stabilizing Force.

On the morning of 7 December 1941, not only was the bulk of the Pacific Fleet at the bottom of the harbor, so too was the US Navy battle doctrine. When Admiral Nimitz took command, he inherited a broken doctrine, a fleet built to fight the wrong war, and no time to wait.

Mission-Oriented Itinerary

In December 1941 the world that had governed the Pacific for decades ended in a single morning at Pearl Harbor. Battleships lay smoldering in the harbor, the Pacific Fleet was shattered, and the United States faced a war for which it was unprepared.

Within days Admiral Chester W. Nimitz inherited command not of a fleet, but of a smoldering disaster. His major ships lay on the bottom of Pearl Harbor—along with the pre-war plans and the battle doctrine that had guided the U.S. Navy for decades.

The old world had collapsed. A new one would not simply begin on its own. It would require leadership.

Together, we begin this historical experience with a seminar introducing Admiral Nimitz and the strategic realities he inherited. We will walk the ground to examine pre-war assumptions that defined the pre-war Pacific, before advancing to Pearl Harbor and the events of the "Day of Infamy".

From Battleship Row to Ford Island, we will examine how Nimitz assessed the situation, rebuilt command, restored confidence, and set the Pacific Fleet in motion––because the war was not waiting.

The program culminates with participation in the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day observances on the 85th anniversary of the attack.
